Civil Society Read Out Report: First United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance

July 2026 | Open Letter

Civil society members of the Global Digital Justice Forum contributed to the development of a ‘Civil Society Read Out Report’ on the First Global Dialogue on AI governance, bringing together the demands of civil society organisations from five coalitions – the Global Digital Rights Coalition, the Global Digital Justice Forum, the Global South Alliance, MAP-AI and the Civil society members of the Gender in Digital Coalition. Acknowledging the Dialogue as a welcome beginning to a broader process of international coordination, this report offers recommendations to strengthen its second iteration and support a more inclusive, rights-based, and effective global AI governance framework.

The report outlines the key civil society demands pertaining to the priorities that the Chair’s summary should reflect under each of the thematic clusters of the Dialogue. It also offers procedural and structural recommendations that are essential to enhance the effectiveness of future Dialogues. These proposals focus on strengthening the UN ecosystem’s engagement with civil society, improving the inclusivity of dialogue processes, and ensuring that future meetings are grounded in transparency and equitable participation.
